Hand Raised Chicks For Sale

Congo African Grey

Physical Description: Congo African Grey parrots are probably the most well-known bird in the entire pet industry. They are entirely grey, with the exception of their brilliantly red tails. Most individuals will maintain a bare patch of skin near their eyes, which will remain white. Unlike the Timneh African Greys, which have two-toned beaks, the beak of a Congo is entirely black. We sell our babies weaned (eating on their own) and well socialized.

Average Lifespan: 40 – 60 years

Sexing: Sexing these birds requires a DNA test, as they are not sexually dimorphic and you cannot tell the sex just by looking at them. All African Greys are DNA sexed and will be accompanied with DNA- & Hatch Certificates.

Origin: Africa (Specifically, parts of the Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Tanzania)

Trainability: Congo African Greys are excellent talkers and will often learn to mimic sounds before moving on to words and phrases. They commonly sound like their caretaker, copying male or female voices and inflections. They are infamous for their talking ability and will continue learning throughout their lifetime, though there is no guarantee that each and every bird will talk. A few individuals, for whatever reason, choose not to. Although there is not much difference between the Timneh and the Congo, it has been said that Congos tend to be “one-person” birds – bonding only with their favorite person, and being intolerable of all others. This however can be avoided by following the tips and advice you will receive with your chick. Our pet African Grey, Marley are so well socialized he will go to any person regardless or sex, age or color. Congos are incredibly intelligent parrots and will need plenty of toys and one-on-one time with their caretakers to occupy them.

Loudness: Congo African Greys are not overly loud birds. They can get a little noisy when they are involved in a rough-and-tumble game, but otherwise they are pretty quiet. In general, the rule is that they will be quiet birds if they are raised in a quiet household. If the household is frequently busy and noisy, then the bird will be, too. They learn their sounds from their surroundings, after all. Congos can make nice apartment birds if they are properly trained

Pricing: Congo African Greys currently sells for R3800.00. This will include DNA sex & Hatch Certificates with free training and manuals on how to raise and care for your African Grey. You will also receive lots of free step by step trick training for your bird.

Blue & Gold Macaw

Average Lifespan: 40 – 60 years

Sexing:

Origin: South America ( Specifically, Panama south to Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay)

Train ability: As with most of the large Macaws, Blue and Golds are mischievous and a eternal 4 year old toddler. It is absolutely of utmost importance that you properly socialize your bird from a very young age. It is recommended that you purchase your Macaw while still on hand feeds so that it will form a strong bond with you and your family. Birds naturally ledge from the nest and their mothers, so hand-feeding a baby you intend to keep for life is not the best idea. Blue and Gold Macaws learn quickly and are easy to train with a little effort. They typically develop good vocabularies, and can be taught to perform tricks on cue. Blue and Gold Macaw, will stand on its head, upside down, in the palm of your hand when prompted correctly. It’s quite amazing to see! It is one of the few birds that we will suggest as a first bird as they accept new people quite readily, have a great personality, and posses a great combination of friendliness and speaking ability. It is one of our favorite birds.

Loudness: Like all Macaws, the Blue and Gold Macaw can be pretty vocal at sunrise and sunset, but with a strict routine and discipline you can teach your Macaw to keep the noise level down. ,We don’t recommend them (or any of the large Macaws) for Apartment living. If you feel that a quieter, smaller bird is more appropriate for you, there are still many species to choose from.

Minimum cage size 122cm x 81cm x 177cm (please see our products page for the appropriate cage)

Pricing: Blue and Gold Macaws are relatively expensive. At present the Blue & Gold Macaws are sold for R10 000.00. This will include DNA sex & Hatch Certificates with free training and manuals on how to raise and care for your Macaw. You will also receive lots of free step by step trick training for your bird.

Umbrella Cockatoo

Average Lifespan: 40 – 80 years

This is wonderful at first, but they quickly become like needy two year olds, craving constant attention and companionship. If you are unable to devote at least 4 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then an Umbrella Cockatoo is not for you. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys for your Umbrella Cockatoo and plenty of supervision during play time. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. Umbrellas will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases.

Physical Description: These are the smallest Cockatoos in the pet bird trade. Most have a pink tint to them, though many are entirely white. The underside of their wings, crest, and tail is yellow. Almost all Goffin’s Cockatoos have a pink or salmon-colored patch near their cheeks, which gives them the appearance of blushing. Like other Cockatoos, they have a crest which will pop up when they are startled or excited. However, their crest is significantly smaller than that of other Cockatoos, and resembles a shark’s fin rather than a large headdress, and smaller and more round than the crest of a Ducorps Cockatoo.

Although the Goffin’s Cockatoo is slightly more independent than other Cockatoos, they still need a lot of attention. If you are unable to devote at least 3 hours of quality time to your parrot each day, then a Goffins Cockatoo is not for you. They are extremely playful and acrobatic. Anything and everything is a toy to them – especially if you don’t want them to have it. For this reason, we recommend a large variety of toys and plenty of supervision during play time. They can learn to speak, but are often difficult to understand. Goffin’s Cockatoos will typically develop a small vocabulary of 5 or 6 of their favorite words and phrases. And, Goffins are most likely the best escape artists of all parrots, and the fastest runners of all of the cockatoos. We call them little raod-runners.

Loudness: Cockatoos are among the loudest of the parrot species, so if you’re sensitive to noise we would suggest looking into other types of parrots. While the Goffin’s Cockatoo may not be as loud as some of the larger Cockatoos, they are still not apartment pets.

Illiger's Macaw

Average Lifespan: 30 - 40 years

Sexing: Sexing these birds requires a DNA test, as they are not sexually dimorphic (you cannot tell the sex just by looking at them).

Origin: Venezuela and Brazil

Trainability: When hand-raised, these birds make wonderful pets. Their owners will be captivated by their antics. Good talkers, and extremely animated, Illiger''s Macaws are very intelligent and quick to learn words and tricks. They are very active, always looking for the next thing to climb or chew.

Loudness: Like all Macaws, the Illiger's Macaw can be a bit vocal. However, they do not have the loud squawk that larger Macaws are famous for. They would make a decent apartment bird if you are not too sensitive to noise (or have nosey neighbors who are). But if noise is an issue, perhaps another parrot species would be more appropriate for your home.

Pricing: Illiger's Macaws are moderately priced at R2500 each

Indian Ringneck (Rose-Ringed Parakeet)

Average Lifespan: African and Indian ringneck parakeets in captivity can live to be 20 to 30 years old. There are some reports of ringnecks living up to 50 years. Taking conscious steps to keep them healthy and happy is the key to a long life span.

Sexing: Indian Ringnecks are sexually dimorphic which means they can be sexed visually. These parrots reach sexual maturity around 3 years of age and females can reach sexual maturity around two years of age. It is important to understand that sexing these birds before three years can be difficult

Origin: The ring-necked parakeet has the widest distribution of all the world’s 330 or so parrots, with a range that stretches from west Africa eastwards across Asia to China. They can even occur at high altitude in the Himalayas, and some isolated populations have arisen from birds illegally released around major cities in Britain and in other countries too.

Train ability: Ringneck Parrots are highly intelligent and, for the right owners, can make excellent pets. They must be handled consistently in order to remain tame. If not sufficient interaction is provided, they will quickly revert to their wild behavior. However, well socialized Indian Ringnecks generally have pleasant personalities.

Loudness: Although mimicking speech is not their strongest point, they can be taught to speak, whistle and mimic other sounds. They can be very vocal and noisy -- rivaling their noisy larger cousins. They can also develop screaming habits, if teased. Their piercing, high-pitched calls can annoy intolerant family members or even close neighbors.

Pricing:  These birds breed only once a year between October and December and are selling for R750 each.

Monk Parakeet (Quaker)

Average Lifespan: 30 – 40 years

Sexing:  Monk Parakeets are not sexually dimorphic and you cannot tell the sex just by looking at them. You will have to surgically sex your parrot at an Avian Vet once it is weaned.

Origin: Primarily, Quaker parrots are a native of Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.

Train ability: Quaker parrots are very intelligent and make captivating pets. They are calm birds that are well-behaved. Though Quakers can be aggressive if wild, they can be tamed fairly easily. In fact, they can be charming little companions that can learn to talk and perform tricks.

Since they are so intelligent, they need constant stimulation and attention like a child. This also means they should not be out of their cage and left unattended for a long period of time. With their curious nature, they often like to explore, and can get themselves into trouble. Expanding upon that, they should not be left in their cage for long periods of time either, because they need interaction.

Loudness: Quaker parrots are fairly quiet birds. Quakers will spend hours by them self practicing to say new words with perfection. They are the most adorable little parrots!

Pricing: Monk Parakeets are selling for R850 each.

Solomon Eclectus

Average Lifespan: 40 - 50 years

Sexing: As was mentione before, Eclectus Parrots are one of the few parrot species that are sexually dimorphic. The males will always be green, and the females will always be red. It doesn't get any easier than that!

Origin: South Pacific (Solomon Islands and near New Guinea)

Train ability: Eclectus Parrots are very calm birds, and are typically easy to train. They have been described as the "sit there and look pretty" birds because they are just so easy-going. They are not as destructive as most parrot species, and enjoy being out and about with their caretakers. Most will learn to talk, although there are a few who never do. Eclectus Parrots have been known to "day dream" on their perches. Because of this, it is best to talk to your parrot before reaching out to him – just to make sure you have his attention. Otherwise, you may startle him and receive a quick bite in retaliation. They also tend to be slightly more sensitive to their environments, and do better in calm, quiet households. As well, even though many people gravitate towards the females due to their striking plumage.

Loudness: Eclectus parrots are fairly quiet birds. They will call to their caretakers from time to time, just to make sure they are not forgotten. Repetitive or obnoxious calls are easily avoided by working with your parrot and teaching him to speak so that he is able to use words instead of squawks.

** A special note about Eclectus Parrots — Eclectus Parrots have very particular dietary requirements. They need lots of fresh vegetables and plenty of calcium. Many enjoy fresh fruit as well, but variety is key. They also should not be fed foods with artificial coloring as it tends to mess with their feathers. An Eclectus that has been eating artificially colored foods may molt out his green feathers and grow yellow ones instead! When their dietary needs are not being met, these birds may resort to feather plucking.

Pricing: Eclectus Parrots are currently selling for R3000 each.
